President Gustavo Petro assured that the fires could reach the Amazon region and the Pacific, two of the most jungle areas of the country, in February, so he will speak with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to take care of the jungle .

“The hot spots in Colombia, which have spread to almost the entire Andean and Caribbean country, will have some movements. In February, the Pacific coast and the Amazon enter the map of heat points much higher than in the country’s history and are reduced a little in the central region,” the president said in a statement.

Petro, who led a crisis room due to the fires that have caused havoc in the last week in Colombia, said that if they happen, the fires “will spread in the jungle in a way that has not yet been written in Colombia.”

“That is why we have been asking for several days to activate international protocols for more air capabilities. “We have to have a specific type of machines and planes (…) to take care of the Amazon rainforest and the Pacific coast,” the president added.

The president added that that is why he will speak with his Brazilian counterpart to “activate the Amazon component” to confront the fire.

The Minister of the Environment, Susana Muhamad, stated this Saturday that there are still 17 active fires in Colombia, exacerbated by the intense heat and lack of rain that the country is experiencing due to the El Niño phenomenon.

Muhamad detailed on the social network

The fires that are still active are in the departments of Cundinamarca and Huila, with five cases each; Boyacá and Magdalena, with two, and Norte de Santander and Valle del Cauca, with one, as well as others in Bogotá.
