President of Vietnam resigns after a year in office – Jornal OPaís

The president of Vietnam, Vo Van Thuong, resigned this Wednesday from his post after a year in power, the Communist Party of Vietnam confirmed yesterday.

According to the BBC, Vo Van Thuong submitted his resignation letter a few days ago and the request has now been approved by the Central Committee of the Communist Party.

In March 2023, Vo Van Thuong became Vietnam’s youngest president when he took office at the age of 53. A year later, he became a historic fact by being the Head of State with the shortest term in the country’s history.

According to the Vietnamese government, the resigning president violated party rules, adding that these “failures had a negative impact on public opinion, affecting the reputation of the party, the State and him personally”.

The reasons that led to Vo Van Thuong’s resignation are unclear, but, according to the BBC, there is speculation about the president’s connection to the Phuc Son Group, which is being investigated.
