The singer was chosen to sing at the coronation of Charles III. An exceptional trajectory for the 38-year-old South African.

It is an event watched by millions of spectators around the world. This Saturday, Pretty Yende occurred on the occasion of the Coronation of Charles III and his wife Camilla, in the prestigious Westminster Abbey, in London. The singer performed Sacred Fire, creation of the composer Sarah Class, known in particular for her work at the BBC. Pretty Yende confided her excitement to theAFPhoping that her performance sheds light on lyrical singing. “Opera is a gift for Humanity, this art has something divine too, so it must be shared” says the South African. This Saturday, she thus became the first black artist to perform solo on the occasion of a coronation in England and was chosen following a performance in front of the King, a year earlier.

The presence of the singer provoked many negative reactions, in connection with the colonial past of England in South Africa. “We can’t change the past but I believe that every generation can through small actions give hope” commented the singer.

From Apartheid to the greatest operas

Born in 1985 in a township of Piet Retief, in a South Africa still under apartheid, Pretty Yende fell in love with opera singing after watching a British Airways advertisement, with the famous Flower Duo in the background. A graduate of the Scala Academy in Milan, the singer has been in demand for ten years on the greatest stages in the world, from the Metropolitan Opera House to the Paris Opera. Hailed for her exceptional voice, her charisma and her luminous timbre, Pretty Yende notably interpreted Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Rosina in The Barber of Seville and the title role of Lucia of Lammermoor at the Paris Opera in 2018.
