Arterial hypertension (HTA) is the main risk factor for cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and an important risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

In this context, the objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of hypertension reported in Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana and Reunion and to describe several indicators of knowledge and management.

The reported prevalence of hypertension was 31.5% in Martinique, 29.9% in Guadeloupe, 22.7% in Guyana and 20.8% in Reunion.

This prevalence was significantly higher among women than among men in each DROM. The proportion of patients treated with an antihypertensive drug among the adults declaring themselves hypertensive did not vary according to the territory, nor according to the sex and exceeded 80% as in mainland France.

Between 65% and 73% of hypertensive adults declared having had advice to modify their way of life in the DROMs against 58.5% in mainland France. In Guyana, 51.5% of hypertensives had a blood pressure self-measurement device at home, while they were 53.8% in Reunion and more than 70% in Guadeloupe and Martinique.

The prevalence of hypertension remains very high in the DROMs, particularly among women. On the other hand, several elements of care did not differ from mainland France with several favorable indicators such as the dispensation of hygiene and dietary advice or the possession of a blood pressure self-measurement device.

Complications of hypertension being frequent in the DROMs, nutritional prevention must be reinforced, especially among women.

Data from the France DROM 2021 Public Health Barometer were used. More than 6,500 people (1,511 in Guadeloupe, 1,526 in Martinique, 1,478 in Guyana and 2,004 in Reunion), aged 18 to 85 and residing in four overseas departments and regions (DROM) were interviewed by telephone on hypertension.

The analyzes were weighted to take into account the survey design and participation in order to be representative of the population of each DROM. The data from mainland France used for comparison came from the France 2019 Public Health Barometer.
