Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said on Friday that his government was considering enacting laws to prevent recurring incidents of burnings and desecrations of copies of the Koran.
Rasmussen made the remarks during a telephone conversation with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Choukri, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Discussions focused on the repeated incidents of burning and desecration of copies of the Quran, which threaten the peaceful coexistence of societies, according to the statement.
The Danish Foreign Minister expressed his country’s regret and displeasure at such incidents in Denmark, noting that such behavior did not reflect the values of Danish society.
For his part, Choukri said Egypt categorically rejects all crimes of burning copies of the Quran, expressing resentment at their recurrence in Denmark without decisive action against the perpetrators.
The Egyptian minister stressed the need for tangible evidence of the Danish government’s willingness to take the necessary steps to protect the sanctity of individual beliefs.
On July 27, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry summoned the Danish ambassador to vigorously protest recent incidents in which copies of the Koran were burned in the Scandinavian country.
