Several actors must participate in the exercise: this is the case, among others, of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), of Nísia Trindade, Minister of Health in Brazil, and of Switzerland Michel Demaré, chairman of the board of directors of the AstraZeneca laboratory. The stated objective of this round table: to debate and talk about “the efforts that would be necessary to prepare health systems for the multiple challenges that await them”.
In short, it is a question of discussing the measures that would need to be put in place if a potentially dangerous virus were to spread again in the world.

The organizers of the forum thus list a whole set of diseases known today which are likely to be the subject of more active circulation on our planet: we find among others the Ebola virus, the Zika virus, the now famous Covid- 19… and this famous “disease X”.
In practice, it was invented by the World Health Organization in 2018: since then, it has appeared in the list of priority diseases and pathogens for research and development, erected by the WHO. By developing this list of potentially dangerous viruses, the health authorities are primarily seeking to prioritize research. This list “does not indicate the most probable causes of the next epidemic either”, explains the WHO on its website.
Disease X, a concept
But in concrete terms, what do we call “disease X”? Difficult to describe since it… only exists in theory. It is in fact a fictitious virus, a concept developed by the WHO to best prepare health systems around the world for the emergence of a potentially dangerous disease.
