BRUXELLES-« Guineans have very little chance of obtaining asylum in Belgium… “. These are the words of Nicole de Moor, the Belgian Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration. She has just launched a campaign to discourage Guineans from traveling to Belgium irregularly (illustrative image).

In September, Guinea rose to fifth place among the countries with the highest number of asylum seekers in Belgium. In 2023, 975 Guineans have already requested asylum in Belgium, more than during the whole of last year (902).

To stem or at least reduce the phenomenon, Brussels announced this Thursday, November 2, 2023 the launch of a prevention campaign to fight against irregular migration from the Republic of Guinea.

« Guineans have very little chance of obtaining asylum in our country. Et through a prevention campaign we want to prevent people from making this dangerous crossing », announced Nicole de Moor.

Brussels now wants to attack evil at the source. That is to say, preventing Guineans from traveling irregularly to Belgium rather than repatriating them.

« Even better than having to send people back after a negative asylum decision, it is to prevent these people from coming to Belgium », explains the Belgian Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration.

According to the observation that the Belgian authorities had to make, “Three quarters of Guineans who request asylum, however, do not need protection.”

This campaign launched by the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration aims to raise awareness among the Guinean population of the dangers of irregular migration, in particular the risk of exploitation and crossings.

The Conakry-Kindia-Mamou-Labé road, the region from which the majority of Guinean asylum seekers in Belgium come, is the main target of this awareness campaign.

The objective is to discourage young Guineans from traveling irregularly to Belgium.
