Riyadh: Saudi Foreign Minister Amir Faisal bin Farhan expressed his protest against the repeated attempts to desecrate the Quran and asked Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström in a phone conversation to take strict action against such activities. Amir Faisal bin Farhan pointed out that the repetition of incidents of holy book burning has led to increasing hatred and limiting efforts for dialogue and debate among people. At the same time, he urged the Swedish leadership to take action to prevent terrorist activities.

Saudi Press Agency reported that the Swedish Foreign Minister, who condemned the attempts to burn copies of the Qur’an, assured that his country will try to prevent all acts that offend religions and their holy books. The report also said that he deeply regretted the abuse by some of the freedoms of opinion and expression guaranteed by the Swedish constitution.

There have been widespread protests as extremists burn copies of the Quran and recite it outside embassies of Muslim-majority countries and mosques in Sweden and Denmark. A week ago, the Saudi Foreign Ministry issued a statement strongly condemning the recent actions of hate groups. Later, the ministry summoned the Danish ambassador to Saudi Arabia and handed over the protest letter directly.
