The conspicuous mosquito can transmit the dangerous dengue fever.

The Asian tiger mosquito is spreading more and more in Europe. Now the striking black and white patterned mosquito has also been sighted in Linz, reports the city. Experts are monitoring the spread very closely because the tiger mosquito can transmit dangerous diseases such as dengue fever. Although, the risk is currently still low, says tropical medicine specialist Heidrun Kerschner from the Linz Elisabethinen Order Clinic.

It therefore makes sense to help ensure that the tiger mosquito reproduces as little as possible and there is even a separate app where you can report tiger mosquito sightings: “Mosquito Alert”.

The tiger mosquito is characterized by its striking black and white pattern and is smaller than the native mosquito species. It is diurnal and prefers standing water as a breeding ground, such as in flower pots, rain barrels or water collection tanks. To limit its spread and minimize the risk of dengue fever, individuals can take the following actions:

Removing Standing Water: Regularly check and drain any water accumulations in and around the home. This includes flower pots, gardening supplies, and other containers where water can collect. Covering Water Containers: If removing water is not possible, containers such as water butts or garden ponds should be fitted with a close-meshed mesh or cover to prevent access to prevent mosquitoes.Use of mosquito nets and sprays: In order to prevent mosquito bites, mosquito nets should be placed on windows and doors. Insect repellent may be used when outdoors. Wear appropriate clothing: Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored clothing to reduce exposure to mosquitoes.

AGES also operates the smartphone app „Mosquito Alert“, where citizens can provide valuable information about the occurrence of the tiger mosquito. The photos sent in there are examined by national and international experts and the finds are displayed on a publicly accessible map.
