Preventing the Global Diabetes Crisis: Urgent Measures Needed to Reverse the Alarming Trend

A new global study warns of an increase in the incidence of diabetes in the world during the next 30 years if appropriate measures are not taken.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, found that 529 million people worldwide have diabetes.

They expect that number to double to 1.3 billion by 2050.

The researchers said the majority of cases had type 2 diabetes, which is the type associated with obesity and is largely preventable.

The pattern of increase in infection rate is not the same worldwide.

For example, prevalence rates are projected to reach 16.8 percent in North Africa and the Middle East and 11.3 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean by 2050, compared to 9.8 percent globally.

The researchers said the prevalence rate is currently 6.1 percent, but all countries are at risk of increasing infection rates.

“The rapid rate of disease prevalence is not only worrying, but also presents challenges for every health system in the world,” said Lien Ung, the study’s lead researcher, noting that diabetes is linked to a number of other diseases such as heart disease and stroke.

The study showed that among the reasons for the increase in the number of infected people is the high rate of obesity and demographic shifts, as the prevalence rate is higher among the elderly.

The researchers said that the data from 204 countries does not take into account the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic because such data is not yet available.

The study, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is part of a broader series of studies on diabetes published Thursday in The Lancet medical journal.

The studies call for more effective strategies to combat injuries and raise awareness of inequality, as the majority of people with diabetes live in low- and middle-income countries and are unable to access appropriate treatment.
