Prevention of Papillomavirus: The Importance of Vaccination for Men

The main affected are the youngest, between 25 and 29 years old, contaminated from the first sexual intercourse, according to a study published by the scientific journal “The Lancet”, which confirms that prevention should also go through them.

Prevention against the papillomavirus, this sexually transmitted virus which can turn into cancer, should also go through men: according to a study published by the scientific journal The Lancetnearly a third of them would be carriers of the virus against which only young girls were vaccinated in France until 2021.

However, these researchers from the Catalan Institute of Oncology, by exploring 65 studies in 35 countries, conclude that: 31% of men in the world are carriers of one or more papillomaviruses. And for those most at risk, those who can cause cancer, it is one in five men (21%).

>> Three questions about human papillomaviruses, which can cause cancer…including in men

The main affected are the youngest, between 25 and 29 years old, contaminated from the first sexual intercourse by “HPV” which is the English abbreviation for “human papillomavirus”… and therefore “reservoir of contamination” as written THE Lancet.

The virus responsible for 69,400 cases of cancer in men

The main cancer generated is that of the cervix, for women, caused 100% by HPV. More than 340,000 deaths every year worldwide. In men, the International Agency for Research on Cancer advances the figure of 69,400 cases of cancer due to a papillomavirus: mouth, throat, and all anogenital areas: anus, penis, vulva, vagina in particular.

In fact, HPVs (there are about 150 of them) infect the skin and mucous membranes during intimate contact. Most often, this disappears within two years, but about 10% of these viruses are high risk, in both men and women. And as the contamination is possible by the skin, the condom is not enough: one can besides catch it without penetration. With, in addition, warts which appear, which are not always visible to the naked eye… but are very contagious… On the scale of a lifetime, the researchers consider that 80% of the population will be contaminated with least once.

Only one solution: the vaccine before sex

To date, only the vaccine is really effective. It is still necessary to administer it very early, well before the start of sexual life, to ensure stronger immunity. The contamination occurs during the first reports: it is therefore a question of vaccinating from the age of 11, with a possible catch-up until the age of 19. And up to 26 years for men who have sex with men, more exposed to infection. But then, we consider that it is too late.

At the start of the school year in September, all 5th graders, girls and boys, will be offered two free injections, one in the fall and the other in the spring. The government’s goal is for 80% of this age group to be vaccinated by 2030. At the end of 2021, only 45% of 15-year-old girls were vaccinated, compared to 6% for boys.
