Preventive Measures for Dam-Reservoirs in Wallonia Amidst Bad Weather Warning

The dam-reservoirs of Eupen, Gileppe and Ry de Rome are the subject of preventive measures while heavy rainfall is expected on the territory, the SPW Mobility and Infrastructures told the Belga agency on Thursday.

For these dams, located in the provinces of Liège and Namur, “we have increased the returns to the river, so as to make room to accommodate potential surpluses”, explains Sarah Pierre, spokesperson for the Walloon public service. These measures were adopted by the Celex expertise unit, which met several times.

The development of the situation is being closely monitored by the regional authorities, while several rivers were placed on Wednesday in pre-flood alert.

Heavy rain is expected this Thursday in Belgium. According to the Royal Meteorological Institute, the east and center of the country should be the regions most affected. Rainfall might reach 50 to 100 liters of water per m2 over a 24-hour period in the province of Liège. These are significant quantities of water since usually the MRI records accumulations of the order of 70 to 100 liters in one month.
