Pricing, Inflation, and Tax Reform: The Belgian Food Sector in 2023

2023-06-14 09:05:01

Prices in the food sector are soaring: +15.51% in May 2023 compared to May 2022 (according to Statbel). Inflation is nevertheless contained: 3.9% announced for this year.

France has just announced measures to lower prices. Belgium cannot, nor does it want to. Belgian manufacturers in the sector prefer to trust the market. In addition, the narrowness of the Belgian market reduces the effectiveness of potential measures and the consumer quickly crosses the border to easily find a cheaper price.

The federal government is counting on its tax reform to give households some breathing space. Belgium remains one of the countries where labor income is among the most heavily taxed in the world. However, it is the political formations, in power for more than a quarter of a century, which promise, with their mouths open, that this will change.

Faced with this, the citizen or the simple observer has reason to be skeptical.

How could seven parties, which have never managed to agree, which are mistreated in the polls, a few months before the capital elections, manage to quickly agree on a reform promised for ages?

At least 600,000 people find themselves at the heart of this democratic issue.
