New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the central government’s free ration scheme will be extended for another 5 years. The announcement was made by the Prime Minister during the assembly election campaign in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, preparing the ground for the Lok Sabha elections.
“The term of the free ration scheme will be completed in December but it will be extended for the next 5 years. This is Modi’s assurance that the stoves will keep burning in the homes of my 80 crore people’ – he declared at an election rally in Durg, Chhattisgarh. The Prime Minister also reiterated that this was Modi’s assurance in the meeting held at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh.
With the extension of the free ration scheme for another 5 years, the Center will incur an additional cost of Rs 2 lakh crore. Currently 81.35 crore people are getting free ration under food security scheme.
After the end of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, a free ration scheme started in 2020 during the Covid period, in January, under the National Food Security Scheme, the new scheme was implemented by making the rice allocation free of cost to the priority category card holders namely Antyodaya Anna Yojana (Yellow Card) and Priority House Holds (Pink Card). This was for one year.
Yellow card holder will get 30 kg rice and 5 kg wheat free. Each Pink Card member gets 4 kg of rice and 1 kg of wheat free.
One and a half crore people will benefit in Kerala
When the scheme is extended, 1.54 crore people who are members of 41.39 lakh yellow and pink cards in Kerala will benefit.
Congress has violated the rules
The Congress alleged that the announcement made by the Prime Minister during the election rallies was a violation of the code of conduct. It is reported that the matter will be approached by the Election Commission. Further action will be decided after checking the details of the speech.
