Princess of Wales Kate Middleton announced – on Friday – that she has cancer and is undergoing the first stages of chemotherapy, asking that she be given “time, space and privacy” while she completes her treatment, after the princess’s disappearance sparked a feverish wave of rumors and speculation for weeks.

Kate (42 years old) confirmed that discovering that she had cancer after a successful abdominal surgery last January was a “huge shock,” but that she is “fine and improving every day.”

After weeks of speculation about her health, the princess said that she and her husband, Prince William, needed time to explain the situation to their children.

Immediately, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wished the Princess of Wales a “full and speedy recovery.”

Sunak stressed that Princess Kate enjoys “the love and support of the entire country as she continues to recover,” adding that she showed “tremendous courage” in the statement she issued.

Sunak said Kate had been “subject to intense scrutiny and unfair treatment by sections of the media around the world and on social media” since her surgery.

He added, “When it comes to health, like everyone else, she should be given privacy to focus on her treatment and be with her family.”

He concluded, “I know that I speak on behalf of the entire country in wishing her a complete and speedy recovery, and I look forward to seeing her resume her activity as soon as she is ready for that.”

Disappearances and rumours

The White House also wished the Princess of Wales a full recovery following the “terrible” news of her cancer diagnosis.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters, “We all heard the terrible news. Our sympathies go out to the Duchess of Cambridge and her family.”

The princess’s disappearance has sparked a feverish wave of rumors and speculation for weeks, especially after the altered family photo crisis and her absence from St. Patrick’s Day celebrations last Sunday, which she had not been absent from for years.

Kate’s publication of a photo in which she appeared smiling and surrounded by her children on the occasion of Mother’s Day on March 10 was supposed to put an end to the conspiracy theories circulating, but international news agencies were forced to withdraw it later, due to fears that it had been tampered with, before the princess presented it. She later apologized and admitted that she had edited the photo.
