The Princess of Wales has revealed she has been diagnosed with cancer and is in the early stages of chemotherapy.
In a statement recorded by the BBC in Windsor, Catherine said her condition was discovered following major abdominal surgery in January. After weeks of speculation about her health, Catherine and her husband Prince William said they needed time to explain the situation to their three children, George, 10, Charlotte, eight, and Louis, five. Big shock for the family
“This was obviously a huge shock and William and I did everything we could to deal with this situation for the sake of our young family,” she said. “As you can imagine, this has taken some time. I needed time to recover from major surgery in order to begin treatment. Most importantly, we needed time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that was appropriate for them and to reassure them that I would be fine.
The 42-year-old Princess of Wales was admitted to the London clinic on January 16th for major abdominal surgery. At the time, the palace refused to reveal why Catherine was being treated, but said it was not for cancer. Catherine said the cancer was only discovered after surgery. The king is also currently being treated for cancer.
Statement released on Friday
In her statement, recorded on Wednesday and released on Friday, Catherine began by thanking everyone who had pledged their support and said she was feeling good and “getting stronger every day”: “It’s been an incredibly tough few Months for our whole family, but I had a fantastic team of doctors who took excellent care of me, for which I am very grateful.
Catherine said she was able to reassure her children that she would recover from her diagnosis. “I told them that I was doing well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that help me get healthy — in my mind, my body and my soul,” she said. “Having William by my side is also a great source of comfort and reassurance. The same goes for the love, support and kindness that so many of you have shown me. This means so much to both of us.”
Wishes for recovery from Harry and Meghan
Brother-in-law Prince Harry and his wife Duchess Meghan spoke out shortly after the diagnosis was published. “We wish Kate and the family health and healing and hope that they can do this privately and in peace,” said Harry (39) and Meghan (42), Duke and Duchess of Sussex, in a statement on Friday evening.
