Principal Financial Group to Acquire Alabama Dental Network SBS

Des Moines, Iowa – Principal Financial Group® is expanding its dental and group benefits offerings in Alabama through the acquisition of DentaNet, the state’s largest dental network, and securing renewal rights for a block of group insurance contracts. The definitive agreement with Southland Benefit Solutions (SBS) was announced on March 3, 2026, signaling a strategic move to bolster Principal’s presence in the Southeast and cater to the small and midsized business market. This expansion of dental benefits is expected to improve competitiveness and drive sustained growth for the company.

The acquisition of DentaNet, which boasts approximately 1,500 dental providers across Alabama, will add to Principal’s existing network of wholly owned dental providers, including Principal Preferred Provider Network, Diversified Dental Services, and First Dental Health. Principal also gains renewal rights for group insurance contracts through Canopy Insurance, both SBS subsidiaries. This move underscores Principal’s commitment to growth within the specialty benefits sector, a “critical growth engine” for the company, according to Kara Hoogensen, senior vice president of workplace benefits at Principal.

Expanding Dental Network and Group Benefits

“Expanding our dental network and group benefits presence in Alabama shows our commitment to continuing above-market growth in the small and midsized business market, and growing our dental business,” Hoogensen stated. The company intends to maintain the existing service levels for both Canopy’s customers and DentaNet’s providers, welcoming them into the Principal family. The deal is expected to strengthen Principal’s position in the Southeast by combining its national brand recognition and expertise with Southland’s and Canopy’s localized service models and established provider relationships.

Principal Financial Group’s decision to acquire DentaNet reflects a broader trend of consolidation within the dental benefits industry. The company is actively seeking opportunities to expand its reach and enhance its service offerings, particularly in growing markets like Alabama. The acquisition is a strategic investment designed to improve dental competitiveness and drive sustained growth, according to Principal.

Details of the Acquisition

Southland Benefit Solutions and Canopy Insurance are both subsidiaries of Collateral Holdings, LLC. The agreement with SBS includes the acquisition of DentaNet’s single-state dental network and renewal rights for a block of group insurance contracts through Canopy Insurance. Principal did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition. The company anticipates a smooth transition for customers and providers, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining the quality of service currently provided by DentaNet and Canopy Insurance.

This acquisition builds upon Principal’s existing network of dental providers, offering a wider range of options for employers and employees in Alabama. The integration of DentaNet’s network will enhance Principal’s ability to deliver comprehensive and affordable dental benefits to its clients. The company believes that this strategic investment will position it for continued success in the competitive benefits market.

The move comes as Principal continues to focus on its workplace benefits business, which includes dental, vision, and other supplemental health insurance products. The company is actively investing in technology and innovation to improve the customer experience and streamline its operations. Principal’s goal is to become a leading provider of benefits solutions for small and midsized businesses across the country.

Looking ahead, Principal will focus on integrating DentaNet into its existing operations and leveraging the combined strengths of the two organizations. The company will continue to monitor market trends and explore opportunities for further growth and expansion in the Southeast and beyond. The successful integration of DentaNet is expected to contribute significantly to Principal’s overall financial performance in the coming years.
