Goat life is a journey. The journey that started with Najeeb and touched many hearts through the novel is now reaching the big screen as a movie. Actress Amala Paul shares the joy of being a part of that journey.

Goat life is a long journey

My schedule was relatively easy. All my scenes were shot in Kerala. There was a comfort zone that surrounds our country. Moreover, Zainu and Najeeb’s romance was depicted in the first schedules. Therefore, it was a happy shooting experience.

It is a very challenging film for actor Prithviraj physically and mentally. How was Amala’s experience?

Although Zainu did not need any major physical changes, there was an emotional journey in the film. Zainu and Najeeb part ways on their honeymoon. Zainu is pregnant when Najib leaves. Zainu has the mental tensions that separation brings. Blessy insists on believable acting. Zainu is a Muslim character of the 80s era. We are shooting it in 2018. It’s live sound. All these were great challenges. However, none of the difficulties faced by others including Prithvi have come for me. It was a very enjoyable film.

Preparations made to sign up

I had read the life of a sheep. But it doesn’t have much information about Zain. Blessed gave me all the references. He gave clear information about Sainu’s background, family etc. Zainu and Najeeb met for the first time on their wedding day. All those scenes are depicted in a terribly poetic way. Blesichetten will act well and will show by acting. Sainu’s language is interesting. Sain says Ikya not Ika. Since it was a live sound, the way of speaking had to be learned correctly.

When Prithvi saw the preparations made

Prithvi is a great actor. But I don’t think many people have used it. Only a few films like Classmates and Indian Rupee have really utilized the actor in Prithvi. Goat life is a similar film. This is a film that makes full use of Prithvi’s actor. Prithvi is always Najeeb for me. Because all I saw in the schedule was Najib. Like you, I am eagerly waiting to see the rest of the scenes. I hope and wish Prithvi as an actor gives her what she deserves.

Such a big canvas, great cast, other crew members, great story.

I feel like I’m lucky. Excellent technicians, camera, music and direction. Not only the technicians but many international actors are also part of the film. It is a great pleasure to be a part of such a project. A lot to learn. In 2018, when the call comes for sheep life, the book is the first thing to read. I read the book in three hours during the flight from Kochi to Delhi. That book had a great impact on me. A book that gives hope to everyone. It is a great miracle that the real Najib came out with those hardships. Even though I didn’t see much about Zain in the book, I knew there would be a background story. At that time, I only wanted to be a part of this film. Looking back I know it was one of the best decisions I made in my career.

How will goat life affect Amala’s career and passion?

Sheep life will definitely influence my career. Because there are some lessons that I will add to life from this movie. Rasool Pookkutty sir, our sound designer. His dedication is amazing. He has a microphone in his hand that can pick up sounds from a radius of two to three kilometers. He’s willing to wait until everyone is quiet, until he gets the audio quality he’s aiming for. Not ready to compromise on that. Same goes for Blessichetten, he is like a hyper baby after becoming a director. Prithvi is a very patient and dedicated actor. I never once saw Prithvi show any boredom or complain. Prithvi is an actor who is happy with the challenges. These are all lessons I am copying.
