A Apple is threatening to remove services like FaceTime e iMessage do United Kingdom if the European country implements changes in the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA)which would force tech companies to disable security features like end-to-end encryption in the event of an investigation.

The changes in question would give the Interior Ministery (Home Office) country the power to compel companies to disable these features without even notifying the public. Still under review, the proposal also received harsh criticism from other companies, such as Meta it’s at Signal.

According to information from the BBC, the British government wants companies to disable these security features to fight cases of child abuse and look for other illegal content. Still according to regulators, the current law no longer accounts for modern security features.

Apple recently filed a nine-page document opposing the proposal. In it, she explained that she will not make changes to the security of her services in a single country, since this would affect users from all over the planet and that it is not possible to disable this type of resource without first notifying her users, since something like that would require a software update. She also argued that these changes “constitute a serious and direct threat to data security and information privacy”.

The IPA, it is worth noting, went into effect in 2016 and already has the power to remove features such as end-to-end encryption in messaging services, for example. The difference is that, today, for this to happen, there needs to be a review and the request needs to be closely monitored independently. The companies, in addition, can also appeal the decision.

Now, the proposals must undergo an eight-week public consultation. The approval of these changes, however, is considered unlikely.
