Caregiver Day is Monday. The opportunity to thank them for all the work accomplished. Thanking them is good. Recognizing their work financially is also important. And this is precisely what AsFam offers. Assistance to Families with Caregivers is a private home care organization. It is active in twelve cantons, including that of Neuchâtel where it received authorization to practice last year. This involves paying people who help their loved ones up to 34 francs 30 per hour.
Juan Garrote, member of the management of AsFam, explained Wednesday in La Matinale that the system was quite simple. “From the moment a person provides basic care at home (…), it is possible that a home care organization will hire them. » For example, basic care includes help with washing. And they are reimbursed by LAMal. The AsFam system consists of “making the care activities of caregivers professional with an employment contract. » Becoming an employee allows them to get a foothold in the world of work again “to reconnect with the AVS and the LPP and to be trained as healthcare assistants with free, certified training”, all in being supervised by a nurse.
With this system, caregivers are paid by LAMal, via AsFam. The question that comes to mind is whether this professionalization of aid will not lead to an increase in health premiums. For Juan Garrote, “it is quite the opposite, because from the moment someone is professionally cared for by a loved one at home, it already reduces the health costs of institutions that lack caregivers and who must make management plans in all directions. And it keeps people at home for a very long time rather than going to an EMS. And this staying at home is all the easier when a loved one is at home.”
AsFam collaborates with home care institutions in other cantons, such as Spitex in Zurich. On the Neuchâtel side, “Nomad, I don’t really know why, does not adhere to this type of system. (…) We don’t really understand why. We lack caregivers, we provide a solution, we professionalize people (…) and we work very well with others. We are not a miracle solution, but an element of the health puzzle. »
As for whether AsFam does not make money on the backs of caregivers, Juan Garrote replies that “if you make the difference between 52 francs 60 and 34 francs 30 and we have to hire nurses, create a training center and paying for administration, this is not the case at all. »
