NEXCO West Japan announced on October 20, 2023 (Friday) that the Sanyo Expressway (Harima JCT – Ako IC), where the outbound line (toward Kyushu) continues to be closed due to a tunnel fire, has a target date of “late December” for the suspension of traffic. did.

The fire broke out on September 5th. There was “severe damage” to the concrete inside the tunnel, which was charred. The following week, a study was conducted to determine how to restore the area, and work is currently underway to scrape off the burnt concrete and re-cast concrete.

At the third technical review meeting held today, the 20th, it was said that “restoration work is progressing smoothly” and there is a good chance of recovery.

While the Sanyo Expressway is closed, cars are streaming onto National Route 2, which runs parallel to the area, causing traffic jams and causing a headache. As the number of users increases especially during the three-day weekend in September and October, campaigns such as “Get points back if you take a detour to Chugoku Expressway” have begun.

NEXCO West Japan stated, “We will continue to work together with related organizations and take measures to restore the situation as soon as possible.”
