Promoting Conservation of World Heritage Sites in Senegal: IUCN’s Support and Initiatives

The coordinator of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) indicated, Thursday, June 15, 2023 in Fatick that his institution plans to support the State of Senegal in the promotion of mechanisms to establish better conservation of classified sites. in World Heritage in Danger.

Sufficient for Youssouph Diedhiou to confide that “our work will consist of supporting States such as Senegal in proposing mechanisms aimed at ensuring the desired conservation of sites classified as World Heritage”.

Mr. Diedhiou, who was speaking at a workshop devoted to the conservation of endangered sites, recalled that in Senegal, it is the Niokolo koba National Park in Tambacounda which has been on the list of endangered sites since 2007.

It should be recalled that the Niokolo Koba National Park was classified as heritage in danger in 2006 by the World Heritage Committee due to a very high level of poaching at the time and the threats that could arise from the implementation of the construction of the Sambangalou dam.

A program intended to ensure better conservation of the National Bird Parks of Dioudj (Saint-Louis) and Niokolo koba was being implemented to maintain these two World Heritage sites, argued Colonel Ibrahima Gueye , representing the Director of National Parks.

“The management of protected areas and reserves is in the content of our programs which are carried out continuously in the field and in training schools for better conservation of our parks”, noted Colonel Gueye.

Concluding his speech, he specified that for a decade, the Directorate of National Parks has been strengthening its personnel to better manage the sites inscribed on the World Heritage List by training several profiles, in particular veterinarians, agronomists and other specialists in wildlife management.
