Prophesee partners with Qualcomm to improve smartphone photo quality

The French startup Prophesee is developing an innovative sensor intended to improve the quality of photos taken by a smartphone. A technology that will integrate Qualcomm processors.

The startup Prophesse is at the origin of an innovative technology: a vision sensor inspired by the functioning of the human eye.

“Our sensor, instead of acquiring images one after the other like a conventional camera, will, like the human eye, only acquire information that changes. For example, moving hands. the amount of data processed in an extraordinary way and to have an acquisition ten thousand times greater than a conventional image sensor. We have applied this principle in the world of mobile telephony to improve image quality and to correct one of the major problem in the photo: camera shake“, explains Lucas Verre, founder of Prophesee, guest of Tech&Co this Monday, February 6.

A strategic partnership with Qualcomm

Concretely, “if something moves during the exposure time, this movement generates motion blur. The edges will not be sharp. Our sensor does not have this problem. We have independent and intelligent pixels which focus on the information that changes”, explains Lucas Verre. With its sensors, Prophesee intends to invest in the smartphone market. Also, during Mobile World Congress de Barcelone, which was held from Monday February 27 to Thursday March 2, 2023, the French company formalized a partnership with the American founder Qualcomm. A strategic alliance intended to integrate Prophesee’s technology into the American giant’s future processors.

“They are in 60% of high-end mobile phones and are fitted to almost all manufacturers. They are essential. Having this partnership with them is very important to us. Thanks to Qualcomm, all mobile phone manufacturers will be able to have access to a solution integrated with our sensor, our fusion software and the Qualcomm processing platform”, says Lucas Verre. According to the latter, the first smartphones equipped with this breakthrough technology should be marketed from next year.
