Prosecution against Mayor Bludenz

The Feldkirch Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against Simon Zahn (ÖVP), mayor of Bludenz in the canton of Vorarlberg. City leaders will have to stand trial in court for abuse of power and false credentials. The content is about building permits in residential areas. For Zahn, the accusations against him “remain difficult to understand”, as he emphasized on City Radio.

The prosecutor’s investigation lasted more than two years; the residential complex on Fohrenburgstrasse was built in 2022. One point of criticism is that Zahn approved the construction project despite negative opinions from city experts, which Zahn denies. The mayor stressed that the Bludenz Regional Administration, the state administrative court and the state ombudsman had largely confirmed the city’s approach as part of its review.

For construction procedures, he relied on experts from the construction law department. “All building notices are drafted by experts in accordance with the provisions of the Vorarlberg Building Act and signed by me,” said Zahn, who hopes to issue a ruling in the autumn. “I trust the Austrian jurisprudence and believe that any remaining misunderstandings and mistakes can be completely eliminated in negotiations,” the mayor said.
