A few days later, she began notifying those affected by email. This is how Jean-Claude Côté, a citizen of the town of Varennes, learned that he was part of the lot.
Around the same time, his phone started ringing more than usual. “I receive lots of fraudulent calls and also some spam,” he says on the phone.
“Before, it happened occasionally, but since I got the email, it’s really 2-3 times a day,” he continues, speaking of a “funny coincidence.”
When he answers, he is asked to give personal information, which he cautiously refrains from doing. Sometimes he hears breathing on the other end of the line, but no one speaks.
