The police zones of Walloon Brabant are issuing a warning against fake “moss removers” or roof repairers, who are apparently very active at the moment in the province. These scammers usually come to the elderly, more vulnerable or gullible, to convince them that work is absolutely necessary at home. And unfortunately, some of these people fall into the trap.
The perpetrators of these misdeeds reinvent themselves depending on the circumstances or the weather. At other times, they are police or water agents, but their modus operandi is often identical.
“Usually there are two of them, explains Vanessa Bayon-Vicente, communications advisor to the Nivelles-Genappe police zone. Either they will carry out the work not very correctly and then ask for a huge sum, which can go up to several thousand euros; either they will use a card reader and take more money than the sum initially planned; or they will use a card reader and they will make several withdrawals saying that the first and the second did not pass, and that way the victim will not immediately realize that a lot of money has been withdrawn from him. It also happens that they find a pretext to enter the house. And while one of the perpetrators will distract the victim, the other will search the dwelling to steal money, valuables or gold.”
