With the widespread spread of seasonal influenza cases around the world, as well as the spread of the new mutant of the JN.1 coronavirus, doctors advise the necessity of returning to wearing a mask, especially during the season of illness and New Year’s celebrations.

In this regard, Vitaly Zverev, a researcher at the Russian Serum Research Institute, advised Russian citizens not to ignore the use of medical masks during New Year celebrations in closed places, in order to protect against influenza and viruses transmitted through breathing.

The press office of the Consumer Protection Agency announced on December 19 that cases of acute respiratory viral infections and influenza in Russia continue to grow. The infection rate increased to 6.5% within one week.

Zverev told TASS that New Year celebrations are usually family celebrations. If there is a desire to attend outdoor events, then if they are outdoors, the possibility of infection with viruses will be low, but if they are crowded events in closed places, it is better to wear medical masks.

The researcher at the Serum Research Institute pointed out the continued rise in infection with influenza virus and other viral infections in Russia, noting that infection with such viruses usually ends during the New Year celebration period.

Commenting on the rise in infection cases, Zverev said that what is happening is normal, noting that low temperature, nervous stress, and immune disorders affect this matter.

He added: “The increase in influenza and respiratory-transmitted viruses usually occurs in the months of December and January.”
