Protection measures dictated to the Statue of María Lionza after 20 years of abandonment within UCV

The Institute of Cultural Heritage (IPC), In the exercise of its powers, it issued administrative measures for the protection and conservation of the sculpture “Maria Lionza”declared Cultural Patrimony of the Nation, which is now in a safe place, after two decades of abandonment within the facilities of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV).

The IPC, in addition, ordered the beginning of an administrative process to determine the responsibilities that may arise and the responsible parties.

The information was offered to the public through a statement from the Presidential Commission for the Recovery of the University City, in order to restore the right of Venezuelans to enjoy and venerate this artistic, historical and spiritual symbol of the nation.

“The work, with visible signs of deterioration, was virtually sequestered without adequate conditions for its preservation, in a place inaccessible to the public, preventing its exhibition, in violation of the fundamental principles of the Defense of the Cultural Heritage of the Republic”, explains the document.

ANNOUNCEMENT

The Presidential Commission for the Recovery of the UCV reports that the Institute of Cultural Heritage, in exercise of its powers, issued urgent administrative protection and conservation measures to safeguard the integrity of the sculpture “María Lionza” —by the Venezuelan artist Alejandro Colina, declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation—and in order to restore the right of Venezuelans to enjoy and venerate this cultural, historical and spiritual symbol of Venezuela.

With these urgent measures, which are being executed, the Bolivarian Government puts an end to the situation of abandonment in which this exceptional cultural asset, whose sole and true owner is the people of Venezuela, was found for almost 20 years.

The work, with visible signs of deterioration, was virtually sequestered without adequate conditions for its preservation, in a place inaccessible to the public, preventing its exhibition, in violation of the fundamental principles of the Defense of the Cultural Heritage of the Republic.

The statue “María Lionza” is in good custody, in charge of specialized technical teams, which work to preserve its integrity and restore the right of the Venezuelan people to enjoy and contemplate a representation of deep artistic, heritage and cultural significance. spiritual.

The IPC, in accordance with the regulations on the defense of cultural heritage and public property, ordered the initiation of an administrative process to determine the responsibilities that may arise and the responsible parties.

University autonomy cannot be an excuse to place Cultural Heritage at risk or to keep it hostage.
