Protesting Police Brutality and Structural Racism: The Adil Charrot Case in Brussels-Midi

Several residents and citizen groups protested again Monday evening against the death of Adil Charrot which occurred in 2020, during a police council meeting in the Brussels-Midi area. Around forty citizens were present in total.

On April 10, 2020, Adil, a 19-year-old young man, was violently struck by a patrol vehicle while fleeing a police check.

In May 2023, Le Soir, RTBF and the French media Blast revealed that one of the police officers involved in Adil’s death had made racist and sexist comments in the past.

“An administrative report co-signed by 18 police officers from the unit revealed comments amounting to incitement to murder,” the citizens declared during their arrest. Police chief Jurgen De Landsheer has reportedly taken “no disciplinary action” to date.

This impunity towards the police officer therefore constitutes “proof of structural racism” which teems within the Brussels-Midi police zone, according to citizens. The latter demand that the council protect whistleblowers within the police force and plead for the opening of civil legal proceedings against the agent in question, who has only been the subject of an investigation internal so far.
