Protests in Iran: 19 dead, nine Europeans arrested

According to Iranian state media, 19 people have been killed in clashes in southeastern Iran. A colonel of the Revolutionary Guards was among the dead in Sistan-Baluchestan province, regional governor Hossein Chiabani told a state broadcaster on Friday. 20 other people were injured.

Meanwhile, the Iranian secret service arrested nine foreigners. The arrested came from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland and Sweden, it said in a statement on Friday evening. They are said to have either taken part directly in the system-critical protests or acted in the background. The secret service did not give any further details regarding the arrested Europeans.

The demonstrations were triggered by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. The moral police had arrested her because of her allegedly “un-Islamic outfit”. What exactly happened to Amini following that is unclear. The woman had fallen into a coma and died in a hospital on September 16.
