After a two-year period of regular reminders of plans to release an electric car, the head of Xiaomi in March of this year promised to start the production of the first model in the first half of next. According to Chinese media, this week, four prototype electric vehicles of the brand were spotted on tests in Xinjiang, Xiaomi executives also noted in the region at the same time.

According to the resource Xiaomiui, the first persons of Xiaomi could take part in testing prototypes of the MS11 electric car, although they officially timed their trip to the region to test the consumer qualities of the upcoming Xiaomi MIX Fold 3 smartphone, which is equipped with Leica optics with four sensors. Among the pictures posted by Lei Jun and Lu Weibing was a group portrait with a banner mentioning branded electric vehicles, as well as a photo of two shadows cast on a rock by two people. The shadows are believed to have belonged to CEO Lei Jun and company president Liu Weibing. The presence of Xiaomi executives in Xinjiang could be judged by the geotag of the published images.

Chinese companies are trying to use lidars as part of their active driver assistance systems, but they are not provided in all price ranges, as they remain a rather expensive type of component. With luck, Xiaomi’s first electric car could hit the market as early as the first quarter of next year. There is nothing surprising in the fact that it is now being tested in different parts of China.
