PSOE and UP temper their positions on Ukraine

The Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, will appear this afternoon in Congress to inform the groups about the situation in Ukraine, after the commotion created in several parties, among them, some allies of the Government, against the sending of a frigate and a minesweeper as part of NATO’s strategy.

However, and although last week was prolific in critical statements, the members of United We Can seem to have tempered their statements, and just yesterday, their spokesman, Pablo Fernández, admitted that Spain is part of the Alliance and, as a member of the Government of coalition, respect the agreements reached. “The reality is what it is,” he said. However, he also pointed out that his formation will vigorously defend a non-warmongering position and against a military escalation in the area.

“Citizens support the Government in the action of NATO and all the diplomatic efforts of the European Union and NATO to resolve the conflict,” said the party’s spokesman, Edmundo Bal.

Pablo Casado, after guaranteeing his support, aimed not only at Pedro Sánchez’s government partners, but also at Vox, with whom he competes, and whom he summoned to speak out. “I have not listened to Vox,” said the leader of the PP, who took the opportunity to recall the pronouncements “sometimes, in favor of the Putin regime.”

On several occasions, the relations of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, with the European extreme right, including Vox, have been discussed, and at certain times they have underlined the similarities between the image of Santiago Abascal and some photos of the Russian president.

The fact is that, after weeks of silence, Vox set its position yesterday. The formation’s spokesman, Juan Buxadé, assured that Vox is “on the side of Ukraine and respect for its sovereignty”, but will not support the government’s action without the authorization of Congress.

Those who are determined to plant the Government in the Ukraine crisis are some of its allies, in particular ERC, Bildu and the BNG, to which are added the CUP and Junts, who have demanded the appearance of the Minister of Defense and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, which has anticipated your demand and will be this afternoon (8:00 p.m.) in Congress.

For her part, the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, replied yesterday to former Vice President Pablo Iglesias, contrary to the participation of the Navy. She did so in a tone that was at least dismissive, considering that she expresses her opinions “from free time and the absence of responsibilities”, when she has “many responsibilities. I don’t have time for the opinions of Pablo Iglesias, which are like those of any other citizen.”
