L‘pulmonary artery begins in the right ventricle of the heart, then splits in two to go to each lung, where it divides into numerous ramifications. The role of the pulmonary artery is to carry blood, depleted of oxygen, from the heart to the lungs. One can observe pulmonary embolism at the level of the pulmonary artery, i.e. it is obstructed by a clot which interrupts blood circulation. Divers are sometimes victims of pulmonary embolism following the presence of a gas bubble in the pulmonary artery.
