Punjab Approves 1,500 Electric Buses in Major Expansion Across 91 Tehsils
The Punjab government has officially approved a sweeping expansion of its electric bus network, bringing sustainable public transit directly to the tehsil level under the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
This structural push moves beyond major metropolitan corridors, injecting modernized public infrastructure into secondary cities and rural hubs. Provincial authorities have confirmed that dedicated electric bus depots will be constructed in every single tehsil included in the rollout. The initial shipment of vehicles for this expanded tier is scheduled to land in Lahore by January 2027, setting the stage for a broader provincial transport overhaul.
Milestones and District Allocations Toward a 3,000-Bus Fleet
Provincial planners are not stopping at the initial tehsil rollout. The administration has set a firm target to scale up the total provincial fleet to 3,000 electric buses by June 2027, with the first phase of this wider expansion wrapping up by September 2027. District-by-district allocations outline a massive logistical undertaking across Punjab’s diverse divisions.
Sahiwal will secure 87 buses for four tehsils, while Dera Ghazi Khan is allocated 63 vehicles. Meanwhile, 11 tehsils in Bahawalpur will accommodate 215 buses. Faisalabad’s 12 tehsils will absorb 202 buses, and Sargodha’s 14 tehsils are set to receive 198 buses.
Integrating Existing Networks and Accelerating Mass Transit
Before the January 2027 tehsil launch takes effect, the province is already managing a sprawling operational footprint. Currently, 612 electric buses are fully operational across various districts, moving millions of passengers on a daily basis. An additional 192 buses are positioned to commence operations in Multan and other districts shortly.
Parallel to the electric bus deployment, urban transit projects are moving at a rapid clip. Construction and renovation work is currently underway across 25 stations of the Lahore Metrobus service, with structural completion drawing near. Simultaneously, mass transit developments in Faisalabad and Gujranwala are advancing rapidly, signaling a multi-pronged modernization of Punjab’s transport grid.
The Road Ahead for Provincial Mobility
The geographic scope of the deployment covers a wide swath of the province. Additional electric bus services have been cleared for Sialkot, Murree, Gujrat, and Sheikhupura. Other districts slated for deployment include Rawalpindi, Jhang, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan, Attock, Okara, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Chiniot, and Layyah.
As depot construction gets underway and delivery timelines approach, the government’s dual focus on urban mass transit upgrades and rural tehsil connectivity presents a profound shift in how millions of citizens will navigate the province. How these localized depots will manage maintenance and charging infrastructure outside major urban centers remains the critical logistical question to watch as the January 2027 launch date approaches.
