Russian President Vladimir Putin opened traffic along the head section of the M12 highway from Moscow to Arzamas, as well as along the finishing section of the Moscow High-Speed Diameter (MSD), which will provide direct access to the M12 Vostok federal highway. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin took part in the opening ceremony, reports a correspondent of the Moscow City News Agency.
“Today we are opening a number of large road facilities. Several sections of the M12 Vostok highway under construction with a total length of more than 300 km are being put into operation at once. As a result, Moscow and Arzamas will be connected by a modern highway. It will significantly reduce travel time between cities by half. In turn, in the east of Moscow, a new section of the Moscow High-Speed Diameter is being put into operation. This is the final stage of construction of the northern direction. And thus the diameter right through the metropolis will connect the M12 and M11 highways to St. Petersburg. And this is an important stage in the development of Russia’s international transport route,” Putin said.
In turn, Sobyanin reported to the head of state that the total traffic flow of the MSD section from the street. Lukhmanovskaya before entering the M12 federal highway will be 40-50 thousand cars per day.

As for the link to Kazan, during this period of time we needed to build 14 km of roads, three overpasses, one bridge. All facilities are ready for launch. The highway is very important. About 40-50 thousand cars and about 20 thousand passengers of public urban transport will pass along it every day, and will relieve congestion on both the Moscow Ring Road and the adjacent road network,” Sobyanin said.
As reported in the press service of the mayor and government of Moscow, the construction of the section of the Moscow High-Speed Diameter from the street. Lukhmanovskaya before entering the M12 Vostok federal highway was started in August 2020. The length of the six-lane section is about 5 km, excluding exits to adjacent streets. Three overpasses with a total length of 721 m were erected as part of the site – at the intersection with the street. Lukhmanovskaya, Pokrovskaya and Maresyeva, as well as a bridge over the Pekhorka River. In order to reduce the noise level in the area of the intersection of MSD and st. Protective screens with a length of more than 2 km have been installed on Lukhmanovskaya.
It is noted that the opening of a new section of the MSD and its connection with the M12 federal highway made it possible to improve transport accessibility of the Kosino-Ukhtomsky, Nekrasovka districts, Lyubertsy and Zhukovsky urban districts of the Moscow region with a total population of more than 610 thousand people.
The new federal highway M12 “East” will connect Moscow and Kazan with the prospect of extension to Yekaterinburg. It is being built as a backup to the existing M7 Volga highway. The construction of the M12 from Moscow to Kazan is planned to be completed by the end of 2023. Travel time between these cities will be reduced from 12 to six to seven hours.
