Russian President Putin has signed a presidential decree that requires buyers from so-called ‘unfriendly countries’ to pay for gas from Russia in rubles starting in April.

Putin has warned that gas supply contracts will be terminated if the terms are not met.

<블라디미르 푸틴 / 러시아 대통령> “If these payments are not made, we will consider the buyer’s failure to meet its obligations and all consequences thereof. No one sells (gas) for free.”

However, it said that it would continue to supply gas according to the agreed scale and price.

Russia’s designated ‘non-friendly countries’ include the United States, the United Kingdom, and the 27 member states of the European Union.

These countries need to open an account with a Russian bank to pay for gas.

In particular, a situation in which heavy damage is expected in European countries, which are highly dependent on Russian gas.

France, Germany and Italy protested, saying it was “a breach of contract and intimidation” and even took a position that they would continue to pay in euros.

<올라프 숄츠 / 독일 총리> “The gas supply contracts we checked were sometimes in dollars, but usually in euros. I told Putin that I would continue to pay like this.”

Germany and Austria have issued an early warning in case Russian gas is cut off due to a refusal to pay in ruble.

The analysis is an analysis that this measure is an attempt to induce European countries to voluntarily violate economic sanctions imposed on Russia and to support the value of the ruble.
