Qatar officially opens its last stadium for the World Cup

The Lusail stadium, the last of the eight venues for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, was officially inaugurated this Friday during a match between the champion clubs of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, Al Hilal and Zamalek, whose kick was sent at 9 p.m. local time.

The friendly match, called Lusail Super Cup, is “the last test of a stadium’s preparation before the World Cup”recalled the director general of the organizing committee, Yasir Al-Jamal.

It is sold out, according to the organizers. The Lusail stadium, with its golden frame, has a capacity of 80,000 seats, which is the biggest stadium in the tournament.

The World Cup final stadium

Located in the new town of Lusail, 20 km north of the capital, Doha, the stadium will host ten matches, including the final of the FIFA World Cup, the first to be held in the Arab world, from November 20 to December 18. The Lusail stadium, the construction of which cost nearly €700 million, is inspired “by the play of shadows and lights that characterizes the traditional lantern”say the organizers. “Its shape and facade echo the decorative motifs of bowls and other vessels characteristic of the golden age of arts and crafts in the Arab-Muslim world. »

Before this official inauguration, a Qatar Championship match between Al-Arabi and Al-Rayyan was organized there on August 11, as well as an orientation evening for the 20,000 World Cup volunteers on September 2.
