The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced on Friday that Qatar will be awarded the right to host the Men’s World Cup in 2027, with all matches to be held in the capital, Doha.

A statement on the federation’s official website said, “The Qatar Basketball Association has obtained the rights to host the 2027 Basketball World Cup, provided that all matches of the prestigious tournament will be played in the city of Doha.”

“In making its decision, the FIBA ​​Central Board was impressed with the file, particularly the elements related to its compact geographic nature, the unique flexibility with scheduling the tournament in stadiums in order to offer the best to fans, as well as the focus on sustainability,” the statement read.

The Basketball World Cup will be held for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa region, similar to the FIFA World Cup, which Qatar also hosted in late 2022.

The statement also stated: “The Qatari capital, Doha, which is one of the best-connected destinations in the world, has direct flights from most potential participating countries, while the recently developed metro and public transport network connects all stadiums, providing a first-class service.” to all visitors.

Qatar will host the third consecutive World Cup in Asia after the 2019 edition was held in China, while the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia will host the 2023 edition next summer.
