Qatari Emir discusses bilateral relations and international issues with Supreme Leader

AA/Doha

The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, on Thursday discussed with the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Ali Khamenei, bilateral relations and regional and international issues.

This is what emerges from a meeting between Al-Thani and Khamenei in the official residence of the Iranian Supreme Leader (Bêyt-e rahbari) in Tehran, according to a press release from the royal cabinet of Qatar.

During this meeting, the two leaders evoked “the relations of friendship which unite the two countries and discussed a certain number of regional and international questions of common interest”, continues the press release.

Earlier in the day, the Emir of Qatar and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi discussed bilateral relations in the fields of politics, economy and trade, as well as improving prospects for cooperation in the tourism, investment, transport and communication sectors.

Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, landed this Thursday, May 12 in Tehran, where he held discussions with Raïsi around “regional and international” issues. It is the first time that the Emir of Qatar has visited the Iranian capital since the election last year of the Iranian president.

The visit of the emir of Qatar follows that of the Iranian president in Doha last February, where Raisi had taken part in a summit of gas-producing countries.

Qatar maintains close ties and historical bilateral relations with Iran – with which it shares the largest gas field in the world – unlike Tehran’s “tense” relations with certain Gulf capitals.

During Raisi’s visit to Doha, 14 cooperation agreements had been signed, notably in the sectors of trade, transport, aviation, media, foreign policy, energy, culture and education.

At the end of his discussions in Tehran, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani left Iran, “towards the Republic of Turkey for a working visit”, indicates a press release from the office of the Emir of Qatar.
