‘Qatar’s mirror’ in tradition Peruma | Qatar World Cup Sidelights

Doha ∙ The Ahmed Bin Ali World Cup Stadium is described as the ‘mirror of Qatar’, reflecting Qatar’s tradition, local culture and the city’s characteristics.

India has a hand in the construction of the stadium located in Al Rayyan, one of the main cities of Qatar. It was originally known as Al Rayan Stadium, but it was renamed Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium on the occasion of the inauguration.

The old Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium was completely demolished and the new stadium was built for the World Cup, but the old name was kept and the inauguration was held on December 18, 2020. Can seat 40,000 people.

The city of Al Rayyan is the gateway to the desert

The city of Al Rayyan is the gateway to the desert of Qatar. It is home to the largest number of natives, who pay great attention to nurturing the traditional identity and culture. Even the little ones are fans of football here as it is also home to local club Al Rayyan.

A symbol of culture

The stadium is built in the shape of sand dunes in the desert. The most important feature of the stadium is its bright facade that attracts anyone at a glance. The cover covers the unique aspects of the city of Al Rayan, the importance of family, biodiversity, the beauty of the desert and regional and international trade. That is why it is called the mirror of Qatar. The design is by Ramboll Group.

A lot of facilities

Inside the stadium, there are facilities for all categories of spectators to enjoy the match. Even the changing rooms for the players are state-of-the-art. Outside, the stadium has 6 football practice pitches, a cricket ground, cycle-jogging tracks, gym, athletic track, riding track for horses, green parks for spectators to relax, cafes, fountains and footpaths. Mall of Qatar, one of the luxury malls of Qatar, is also nearby. After the World Cup, 20,000 seats will be donated to underdeveloped countries.

Indian signature

The stadium was built by a local company Al Balag Trading and Contracting Company and India’s Larson and Turbo Limited (LND). Fully built as per environmental sustainability standards. Even before construction was completed, it received a 4-star rating from the Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD) global sustainability rating system for its eco-friendly design, construction, management and energy efficiency. For the first time in the history of the World Cup, the central government delegations coming to Qatar on official visits do not return without visiting India’s signature stadium.

First match

World Cup action at the stadium will begin on November 21 with a group stage match between the USA and Wales. 7 matches including group stage and round-16 will be played here. Since its inauguration, it has hosted many competitions including the FIFA Arab Cup.

Take the metro

If you get off at Al Rifa station on the Metro Green Line, it’s a walking distance to the stadium. Curva buses and taxis are available. There is a Stadium Express bus from Doha here for spectators.
