The Brazilian daily Globo reports on Tuesday that Qatar, through its company Qatar Sports Investment (QSI), has been discussing with the Santos club for several months with a view to a probable investment.

Will Pelé’s former club go under the Qatari flag? It is still too early to say but this Tuesday, the Brazilian daily Globo explains that discussions have indeed started between the company Qatar Sports Investment (QSI) and Santos. It has even been several months since negotiations began between the Brazilian club and the company owned by the government of Qatar, which also manages Paris Saint-Germain.

Qatar wants to invest in several clubs including Santos (but not alone)

QSI have even already asked the president of Santos, Andres Rueda, for the financial statements in order to study the club’s accounts. The two entities are still discussing what the business model will be. Because this investment would not be in the same vein as the takeovers of Brazilian teams which have flourished lately (Bahia by Manchester City, Botafogo by OL boss John Textor, etc.), where foreigners have bought shares in newly created companies. The Qataris would like to join other investors in owning several clubs.

Globo also reports that the rapprochement between Santos and QSI would have been made through Neymar Senior. He is said to have recently taken part in the negotiations between the club and Blaze, the latter’s main sponsor. In April, it was Neymar Junior who went to the Urbano-Caldeira stadium – better known as Vila Belmiro – to watch a match. An event during which the Brazilian had declared to journalists “that he would return soon”.

The discussions between Santos and PSG would only be at the exploratory stage for the moment. The capital club has already invested in Braga and is considering other possibilities and other clubs, such as Malaga. It remains to be seen who regulates these multiple ownership models, FIFA and UEFA having so far not really decided on the subject…
