Qualcomm introduces the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, aiming to equip high-end Android smartphones with generative AI capabilities directly on the device.

Qualcomm announces the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, designed specifically for generative AI. This new chipset is intended to power a variety of high-end Android smartphones, promising significant advances, according to the manufacturer. One of the key innovations lies in its ability to manage generative AI tasks directly on the smartphone (on-device). The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 thus supports various AI models, such as Llama 2 and Gemini Nano.

The product’s technical specifications posted on Qualcomm’s website indicate that the Qualcomm AI Engine enables on-device generative AI, with support for multimodal models, up to 10 billion parameters. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 will be adopted by the main manufacturers, specifies Qualcomm, which notably mentions Honor and Xiaomi.

“With features like on-device generative AI and advanced photography capabilities, Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is designed to enhance the user experience, driving creativity and productivity every day,” said Chris Patrick , Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Devices at Qualcomm.

On-device processing of GenAI would also be an avenue considered by Apple.
