Faced with the increase in cancer cases in Quebec, research and patient support organizations are reiterating their request to the Legault government to develop a cancer action plan.

Friday, the Quebec Cancer Foundation, the Cancer Research Society, Leucan and Procure unveiled their dissertation entitled Cancer doesn’t wait : the future Santé Québec agency must act! (New window)

548 Quebecers have been diagnosed with cancer, which represents 185 new cases per day”,”text”:”In 2023, in Quebec, it is estimated that 67,548 Quebecers have been diagnosed with cancer, which represents 185 new cases per day”}}”>In 2023, in Quebec, it is estimated that 67,548 Quebecers will have been diagnosed with cancer, which represents 185 new cases per day, indicate the authors of the dissertation. They emphasize that, of this number, a third will die (i.e. 22,500 people per year and 62 per day).

If this constant increase is mainly attributable to aging and the growth of the population, organizations dedicated to the fight against cancer emphasize that faced with this tragic observation, an action plan with measurable objectives and dedicated funds is necessary.

The eight recommendations :

Have a goal of reducing the mortality rate linked to cancer by 2035; Promote the availability of self-tests as soon as they are approved; Raise awareness in remote and marginalized communities through field organizations; Centralize patient data so that they follow it throughout the network;Increase scholarships in oncology (they are 50% higher at the federal level);Allocate a budget devoted to fundamental and clinical research in oncology;Appoint a vice-president assigned to oncology in the future Santé Québec agency; Include measures for rare cancers in the future action plan.

Cancer is the deadliest disease in Quebec, so it deserves to be given a very high priority.

His message was particularly addressed to the Quebec Minister of Health, Christian Dubé.

In a written statement, Mr. Dubé said he welcomed the possible solutions that feed into the discussions already underway, particularly with regard to the availability of self-tests, collaboration with organizations and access to data.

Each death from cancer is one too many. We agree that we must continue the work and act more in prevention.

At a press conference, Manon Pepin, president and CEO of the Cancer Research Society, highlighted that several provinces such as British Columbia and Ontario have agencies dedicated to cancer, which makes it possible to coordinate efforts and to have some accountability.

If most provinces adhere to the Canadian cancer registry, Quebec goes it alone and is behind. 2021″,”text”:”Yesterday, in the last update, we revealed the data for 2021″}}”>Yesterday, in the last update, we revealed the data for 2021, underlined the general director of the Quebec Cancer Foundation.

Although cancer stakeholders have noted some progress recently on the government side, particularly in the detection of colorectal cancer and breast cancer, they emphasize that the province can do better.

We are not last in the pack, but we are not the best either, declared Mr. Décelles, who affirms that with all the resources we have in Quebec, we should be in the leading pack and why not the best in Canada.

000 people have already made an appointment for colorectal cancer screening”,”text”:”Since the announcement last February, more than 25,000 people have already made an appointment for colorectal cancer screening”}}”>Since he announcement last February, more than 25,000 people have already made an appointment for colorectal cancer screening, indicates the office of the Minister of Health. These are concrete steps forward which are part of the priorities of the Health Plan in order to focus more on prevention.

According to Laurent Proulx, CEO of Procure, Quebec could take inspiration from the American Cancer Moonshot initiative. This aims to halve the cancer mortality rate in 25 years by ensuring coordination between research, treatment development and patient care under unified management. Santé Québec must absolutely adopt equally ambitious objectives.

For her part, Juli Meilleur, general director of Leucan, underlined the importance of research at the pediatric level. Research and clinical research have ensured that my son is still here today, she confided about her son, now 26 years old and who was diagnosed with cancer three times during his childhood.

She also recalled that currently, nearly one child per day is diagnosed with cancer or a recurrence in Quebec and that 30% of them will have serious after-effects throughout their lives.
