An Amsterdam court sentenced Spartak Moscow football player Quincy Promes to six years in prison for drug smuggling, RTL journalist Wesley Meyer reports from the courtroom.

According to the verdict of the judiciary, which was handed down on Wednesday, Promes and his accomplice, uncle Marilio V., were recognized as key participants in the criminal activity and were sentenced in absentia to six years in prison.

In May 2023, Dutch prosecutors charged the footballer with drug smuggling weighing 1,370 kilograms. According to media reports, the Dutchman is suspected of involvement in the import of two shipments of cocaine (720 and 650 kg), which were intercepted in the port of Belgian Antwerp in 2020.

The evidence against Promes consists largely of a series of intercepted communications. According to prosecutors, these conversations show that he was actively involved in smuggling. During the hearing, the Dutch prosecutor’s office asked for a 9-year prison sentence for Promes.

Promes, through his lawyers, declared his innocence. The athlete himself was not present at the court hearing and is currently at the Spartak training camp in the UAE. The 32-year-old player’s current contract with Spartak expires in June of this year.
