LIV Golf Players to Compete in The Open Championship
In a important move for the world of golf, The R&A announced a new qualification category that opens the door for LIV Golf players to participate in The Open Championship.
The groundbreaking decision grants the top LIV Golf player not already exempt in the top five of the 2025 LIV Golf Individual Standings, following the final round of LIV Golf Dallas on July 29, a coveted spot in The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, scheduled for July 17-20.
Expanding Opportunities for Top Golfers
Mark Darbon, chief executive at The R&A, emphasized the importance of providing pathways for top golfers to reach the pinnacle of the sport. “The Open is a global championship for the best men’s golfers and each year we review our exemptions to ensure that we offer pathways into the Championship based on results achieved on the leading professional tours,” he stated. “We acknowledge that players competing in LIV Golf should also have the chance to secure places in The Open through its individual season standings as well as existing pathways.”

International Series Macau Joins Open Qualifying Series
Furthermore, the International Series Macau presented by Wynn has been designated as one of the 15 Open Qualifying Series events. this series of elite tournaments sanctioned by the Asian Tour provides a valuable pathway for golfers to advance to the LIV golf League and possibly secure a spot in The Open.

This growth comes shortly after the USGA, the governing body of golf in the United States, announced a similar exemption for LIV Golf players based on the LIV Golf Individual Standings.
currently, 12 LIV Golf players have already secured their places at Royal Portrush: Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Marc Leishman, tom McKibbin, Phil Mickelson, Joaquin Niemann, Louis Oosthuizen, Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith and Henrik Stenson.
