Rabies Awareness: Fast Support and Treatment for Rabies Cases in Maghreb Countries

2023-10-15 20:33:00

On October 9, a woman infected with the rabies virus, during a stay in a Maghreb country, died at the Reims University Hospital. The medical profession gave a press conference to review the treatment of the patient.

Fast support

The victim presented himself to the hospital emergency room on Saturday October 7 accompanied by a relative. Both were injured by a cat in a Maghreb country a few weeks ago (about two months). The woman had a significant bite on her heel. Very quickly, the medical team identified symptoms suggestive of neurological damage linked to the rabies virus. Despite rapid treatment in intensive care, the patient died on Monday October 9, 2023.

The Dr. Amélie Servettaz, head of the infectious diseases department at Reims University Hospital, specifies that there is a variable incubation time, like many infectious diseases. For rabies, this can be several weeks depending on the area where the patient was bitten. This is an unprecedented case in France; cases of contamination by the rabies virus, with the exception of bats, date back several decades. France has been officially declared rabies-free since 2001.

Inter-human contamination never demonstrated.

The man who accompanied the victim was asymptomatic. He therefore benefited from post-exposure treatment at the end of last week. Perrine Parize, deputy director of the national rabies reference center, specifies that rabies is not transmissible from person to person. Only contact with the saliva of an infected subject on a wound can become a source of contamination.

Given the seriousness of the disease, tracing of all healthcare personnel who had been in direct contact with the patient was carried out, to assess the need for anti-rabies vaccination on a case-by-case basis.

The medical profession reminds that in the event of contact with a stray or suspicious animal, the wound should be carefully disinfected and a doctor from an anti-rabies center should be consulted as quickly as possible, in order to assess the need to implement the appropriate treatment.

Doctors also specify that when neurological damage is proven, there is currently no effective treatmentwith few exceptions, all reported cases of rabies have always led to the death of the patient.
