The Race Around Lower Austria (RAN) ended on Saturday evening with premiere victories. 158 athletes were at the start. In the men’s race, Philipp Kaider won at home, the fastest woman was Maria Winter.

The starting gun for the ultra cyclists was fired on Friday at 4 p.m. in Weitra (district of Gmünd). From there it went clockwise 600 kilometers with 6,000 meters in altitude along the outer border of Austria’s largest federal state.

The race went through 15 districts. The conditions with a headwind at the beginning and occasional rain showers in the morning hours in the Semmering area would have “demanded everything” from the participants, according to the organizer in a broadcast.

Exciting duel for the men

In the men’s race, reigning 24-hour time trial world champion Philipp Kaider was able to win the RAN for the first time. The Wolkersdorfer (Mistelbach district) fought a neck-and-neck race with Dominik Maierhofer for around twelve hours, but was ultimately able to break away from the Salzburger and reached the finish line after 17:36 hours – eight minutes ahead of Maierhofer. “None of us let up. The win is very important to me,” said Kaider at the finish. Third was Manfred Zoeger from Buckligen Welt (18:17 hours).

There was also a premiere victory at the RAN for the women. Maria Winter from Upper Austria covered the distance the fastest in 22:05 hours. Lilian Kuster from Switzerland, who lives in Tulln, came second ahead of Sabine Kornelson from the Neulengbach cycling club (district of St. Pölten). Eight women were at the start this year, more than ever before, according to the organizer.

In the three-team ranking, the three-time Olympic luge champion Felix Loch and his team “Athletes for Ukraine” set a new track record of 16:19 hours. In the women’s category, the “Wonder Women” won with last year’s RAN winner, Justyna Sieber. In the two-team ranking, first place went to the “Thomas Wiesmayr GmbH” team, while the German team “RadelnundHelfen” won the mixed ranking. According to the organizer, numerous teams used the race to collect donations.
