This July 9, 2023 is a special day for Rafael Llyod Iglesias. On this summer Sunday, the musician indeed celebrates his 57th birthday. But above all, since mid-morning, the first extract from his Sinfonia del mar (“Symphony of the sea”, in Spanish) is available on the Internet with the accompanying clip, shot in Plounéour-Brignogan-Plages by Brestois Antoine Le Guevel.

Born of a Welsh father and a Spanish mother, Rafael spent nearly fifty years living between his two favorite cities: Madrid and Oxford. And during all these years, there is one that has always followed him during his incessant comings and goings: his guitar. Rafael is indeed a flamenco musician.

Hearing loss

But about fifteen years ago, hearing problems disrupted his career. The evil is only getting worse, until it makes him completely deaf for two years. Pretty annoying for a musician. “My only way to feel the vibrations of my guitar was to rest my chin on the body,” recalls Rafael.

Finally, the placement of implants will allow him to make a new start and reconnect with music. So, to resume a career left on hold for several years, he sets off in search of a calm and peaceful place in the south of France. But, it is finally in Landerneau that he and his partner Frédérique will find their happiness, and will take up residence in September 2019.

beautiful business card

Since then, Rafael has notably embarked on a long-term project, the writing of an ambitious work: his symphony of the sea. A piece that mixes flamenco guitar, classical orchestral arrangements, and synthesizers.

It is a first movement of this symphony, an adagio, which can now be heard on the Internet. “The melody, improvised on the guitar, was recorded in one take, late at night, after viewing images of a snorkeler dancing with humpback whales at the bottom of the sea, explains the musician. It’s a piece that looks like me, that defines me as I am today. A first job that could already serve as a nice business card, he who is looking for contacts in France. Because, for now, the rest of the work is still at the composition stage.

A beautiful tribute

Anyway, Rafael will be from this Tuesday, July 11, at 6:30 p.m., at the media library, to show his clip and talk about his project. A project that already seems to excite some who were able to listen to the extract before the others. “It was splendid! Sober, without any unnecessary intervention, in other words you played each note with such a magnificent sound and emotion that in the end, it is a captivating piece. Please, I want more! “, thus commented Nicholas Hooper, composer in particular of the music of two Harry Potter. A beautiful tribute.
