A powerful thunderstorm swept through New York City leaving flooding roads and train lines in its wake.

A flash flood warning was in effect for Manhattan, the Bronx and the surrounding region until 6 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Authorities closed the northbound lanes of the Major Deegan Expressway at West 179 Street in the Bronx around 4:00 pm due to flooding.

The southbound New England Thruway was closed at East Gun Hill Road in the Bronx. The A train subway line was closed between West 168th Street and West 207th Street due to water on the tracks.

The Metro-North commuter rail system has suspended trains on the New Haven Line in and out of Grand Central Terminal. The Hudson Line had delays of up to 45 minutes. The Harlem line resumed after being suspended and had 70-minute delays.

Some of the worst flooding would have been in New Jersey, particularly in Bergen and Passaic counties, according to the Weather Service.

At least one occupant had to be helped out of a car that was trapped in water near Paulison Avenue and Route 46, according to Passaic Mayor Hector Lora, whose city helped with the rescue.

Lt. Robert Bracken of Clifton told reporters the worst flooding was concentrated along Piaget Avenue and Route 3.

The fire department issued multiple tweets warning of flooding throughout the city of Passaic and urged drivers to avoid deep water. The department cited heavy flooding along Hudson Street, where Humvees had to rescue a vehicle, as well as another on Madison Street, according to the department’s official Facebook page.

Route 17 experienced extensive flooding in both directions between Farview Avenue and Century Road, where County Emergency Service Police, Fire and Rescue had to remove multiple people from cars in the area of ​​BJ’s Wholesale Club, Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.

The New York Weather Service’s regional forecast office, which covers five counties in northern New Jersey, received preliminary reports of flooded streets and water rescues in Bergen County over the past few hours, including some in Fair Lawn, Hackensack, Lodi, Paramus and Rochelle Park.

As of 6:45 p.m., PSE&G utilities, Jersey Central Power & Light and Orange & Rockland reported 535 customers without power in Bergen County, 1,032 outages in Essex County, 1,574 outages across Passaic County and 1,809 clients who experienced outages in Morris County.
