Raising awareness about colorectal cancer at the Lebanese American University Medical Centers, St. John’s Hospital and Rizk Hospital

On the occasion of the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month that takes place in March, the Lebanese American University Medical Center – St. John’s Hospital and the Lebanese American University Medical Center – Rizk Hospital organized an open day in cooperation with the NGO SAID in their medical centers.

The aim of the day was to highlight the importance of routine colorectal cancer screening in order to prevent the occurrence of the disease, as well as to promote healthy lifestyle habits that can reduce a person’s risk of developing colon, rectal or anal cancer – the three types of cancer collectively referred to as Colon and rectal cancer.

More than 75 people participated in this activity and benefited from free FIT kits to do a preliminary colon cancer test. The attendees also received free medical consultations from the team of the Diet and Nutrition Department and the Gastroenterology Department, managed by Dr. Majd Rostom at the Lebanese American University Medical Center – St. John’s Hospital, Dr. Rajaa Shatila and Dr. Riyad Azar from the Lebanese American University Medical Center – Rizk Hospital. The medical center offered a 50% discount on “colonoscopy” for everyone who had a positive FIT test result.

Noting that colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer worldwide and that regular check-ups are the best way to protect yourself from the disease. With early detection, cancer is more treatable and preventable, by detecting abnormal growths (polyps) that later develop into cancer.
